Customer Reviews

This is not a puzzle!Absolute disappointment! Made out of cheap Styrofoam. Says it is for age 5 and up, try 35 and up! I about lost it putting this thing together with my kid. Don't waste your money. 1Fun to build, great to look at, not for active playThis model arrives as a stack of flat pieces of thin foam core (a bit like heavy cardboard). You punch out the pieces then fold and insert tabs into slots to create the shapes, which all fit together to form the space shuttle with its fuel tank and rocket boosters, and the launch platform with some little astronaut figures and a flag (these figures are kind of silly-looking if you ask me -- I left them off). It took me about 2 hours to build the whole thing, and I didn't use any tools or anything else besides what was in the box, although I recommend a toothpick or similar object for punching out the slots. It takes a little ingenuity and dexterity, but I would guess a 10-year-old could certainly do it.The pieces are made with precision and fit together perfectly. The instructions are all drawings, no text. This means you don't have to worry about a language barrier, but here and there you may have trouble figuring out exactly what it's trying to depict. Also, in a couple of places, there were left and right items that were mirrored but the drawings showed them as identical. You have to know to reverse the directions with one of them. Some of the pieces look very much alike even though they are not, so you have to be careful to use the correct ones in each step. Labels in the diagrams do not always make it easy to figure out which of several similar pieces you should be using. The model shuttle comes nameless so you can choose its name. The set includes decals with the names of the four remaining shuttles: Atlantis, Discovery, Endeavour, and Enterprise, and the diagram shows you where to put it on the wing.Comparing the finished model with photographs from NASA's website reveals that the model has all the right proportions and colorings to make it look, from a distance, exactly like a real space shuttle ready for launch (close up, you can see the creases and the tabs sticking out of slots, so it's clearly less realistic from a close angle). Once assembled there are 5 major parts: the launch platform, the big orange external fuel tank, two solid rocket boosters, and the orbiter. They all fit together with the same tab-in-slot concept, but don't expect to be able to actively play with this shuttle unless you glue all the joints and tabs. Some of the smaller pieces fall off quite easily and all the major parts separate from each other without much coaxing. Getting the whole assembly perfectly lined up to fit correctly on the platform is tricky and can take several tries, while the pieces all keep falling apart. You won't be taking it off and putting it back on a lot without some frustration. This isn't the kind of thing you'd take completely apart and put back together again another time (like a puzzle), so I'd recommend using glue, even if you won't be actively playing with it. Then you wouldn't have to worry about accidentally knocking the pieces loose and spending the next hour trying to get the shuttle back in one piece on its platform.Another consideration is the fact that it is made from lightweight foam. If you do play with it, rough play is out of the question. If you keep it on your bookshelf, just be sure not to let any books fall on it! The foam core is very thin, so it can be crushed pretty easily.I was slightly disappointed that the orbiter doesn't have working bay doors that open. This is further evidence that it was meant to be a looking-at model, not a playing-with toy.Summary: This is a fun model to build, with precision pieces that are made with realistic graphics and proportions. It makes a great desk or shelf decoration but is a bit too fragile for active play, both in the sense that some of the pieces come apart too easily, and that it is made from a somewhat fragile and lightweight material. I recommend leaving off the little astronaut and flag figures and using glue on the tabs and joints of each major piece. If what you want is a realistic-looking decorative model that is inexpensive and fun to build, this one is for you. 4Total JunkI usually do not write reviews but this is pure junk. Construction is poor quality and breaks very easily. I guess this is the reason this piece of paper is so cheap. Save yourself a headache and dont buy this for your kids 1Great for the whole familyWe bought this for our son's 6th birthday. He loves puzzles, and thought he would enjoy it. He LOVED it. It was easy to put together, it just took a while because of the pieces you have to pop out. He did it mostly on his own. It looks great on the stand. We use it more for a decoration, since it is not suitable for a toy. The quality is thick and it is a great size for kids to put together. 5Good Looking PuzzleAfter building this puzzle, I think it looks great. The process of building it, not so much. At times this was a frustrating puzzle. The directions are horrible. I found that it was missing several steps for putting some of the pieces together and I had to figure it out. Other than that, once you get through the building process, you will have a nice model of a space shuttle. 5Five StarsBought for my nephew, who is thrilled with it since he is a space nut! 5Boyfriend loved it.I bought this for my boyfriend for Valentine's day- he really enjoyed it. I would describe it as less of a "puzzle" and more of a "model." It comes with all the pieces, and instructions for putting it together. It also needs glue to stay together. It took him maybe an hour to put together, for a kid, it might take longer. 4Not for kids! Too flimsy.More difficult to put together than expected and very flimsy. Fell apart too easily, had to glue a few pieces to keep it together. Disappointed with this purchase. 2A very fun puzzle to put togetherThe pieces were all present and accounted for. The placement of the shuttle/rocket booster/engines on the black base is secure the first time around, but becomes looser the more it is messed with. Suggest putting it on the base when you are ready to display it and leave it alone. Finished product is pretty true to the pictures. 5Skeptical but then AWESOME!My nephew wants to be an architect and of course the small metal puzzles seemed a bit out of his league while this might not exceed his expectations! However, we had a blast doing this puzzle together. He stays weekends with me quite a bit so it's like having a built in older brother for my daughter, so this was challenging and yet he loved teaching her about how to do it. The experience is what makes this item so often. 5
